The Spencer family is the main branch of Princess Diana’s family tree. She was born into the Spencer family, as her father John Spencer (1924-1992) was a Viscount and her mother Frances Roche (b. 1936) was a Lady. Her paternal grandparents were Albert Edward John Spencer, 7th Earl Spencer (1892-1975) and Cynthia Hamilton (1908-1972). Her maternal grandparents were Maurice Roche, 4th Baron Fermoy (1885–1955) and Ruth Gill (1909-1993).
The Spencer family goes back to 1817 when Diana’s great-great-great grandfather George John Spencer, 2nd Earl Spencer was born. George John Spencer had seven children, including John Charles Spencer (1835-1910), who would become the 3rd Earl Spencer. Diana’s father, John Spencer, was the 8th Earl Spencer and her brother Charles is now the 9th Earl Spencer.
Diana’s paternal family tree also includes notable relatives such as Prince William of Gloucester and Lady Mary Cambridge, both of whom are great-great-grandchildren of Queen Victoria. Her granduncle Lord Mountbatten was a close friend and mentor to Prince Charles and his uncle Edward VIII (later the Duke of Windsor).
On her mother’s side, Diana descended from several aristocratic families such as the Barons Fermoy, the Villiers and the Earls of Clarendon. Her maternal grandmother Ruth Roche’s family was one of the wealthiest in England during the 19th century.
Diana had two siblings: Sarah, Baroness Fellowes (b. 1955) and Charles Spencer, 9th Earl Spencer (b. 1964). She also had four nieces and nephews: Lady Kitty Spencer (b. 1990), Lady Eliza Fellowes (b. 1992), Louis Spencer, Viscount Althorp (b. 1994) and Lady Amelia Spencer (b. 1995). Princess Diana’s family tree extends to a number of other branches and includes the British Royal Family as well as a number of prominent figures in politics, business and the arts.
Sadly, on August 31 1997, Princess Diana passed away after a car crash in Paris. Her family tree will continue to be remembered for generations to come as an inspiration for people from all walks of life. The legacy she left behind continues to live on through her sons William and Harry, her brother Charles, her nieces and nephews and all of the other members of her family.
